6 gluten-free & sourdough focused bakeries around the world that you must know about

Since starting my allergy-friendly baking adventures, I connected and followed some truly amazing bakeries which inspired my own sourdough baking journey. I thought it would be a great idea to share some of them with you.

Here is the list. Enjoy!

BOULANGERIE L’ALTERNATIVE

I had never considered traveling to Belgium, but after discovering Boulangerie L’Alternative bakery (@boulangerielalternative), I think it’s a must! Boulangerie L’Alternative is an organic, gluten-free & dairy-free bakery run by a talented baker, Pierre Hennen.

Pierre is a very creative and detail-orientated person, and it truly reflects in every aspect of his work - his beautiful bakery in the countryside, the special tools he chooses to use for his craft, and most importantly, his precious baked goods. Seasonal sourdough bread, raw sourdough pizza dough to take home, gluten-free Belgian waffles or bespoke forest cake are just a few of the options you could order from his bakery.

WOW BAKES

I think those pictures say it all! Wow Bakes (@wowbakes) is a gluten-free and 100% sourdough micro bakery based in Santa Monica (California), run by the lovely Sharon. Yes, everything she makes is made with gluten-free sourdough, and that includes doughnuts, tarts and bagels! I would highly recommend checking her Instagram page for some sweet sourdough inspiration, and if you happen to live in Santa Monica or surrounding areas, you must make an order!

AERA BREAD

The Aera Bread (@aera_bread) bakery is one of the main reasons I want to go back to Berlin! Founded by the incredible Ava Celik, this bakery is definitely most well known for its beautiful open crumb sourdough loaves that look very much like the traditional sourdough made with gluten flours. Alongside the bakery, they also run a stylish café where you can enjoy a cup of coffee with gluten-free treats or a toastie made with their gourgeous sourdough bread.

H.U.G BAKERY

H.U.G Bakery (@h.u.g.bakery) is an organic gluten-free bakery based in Copenhagen run by two lovely ladies - Katherine and Mette Marie. If you’re looking for the healthiest sourdough bread out there, this is the bakery to go to. Every sourdough loaf they make is made with 100% wholegrain flours!

Not to say, Katherine and Matte Marie are very generous to share some of those recipes on their Facebook page. If Denmark is not on your travel list, you should definitely try one of their recipes shared online.

ARISE BAKERY

I would love to try Arise Bakery’s (@arise_bakery) freshly baked sourdough one day! I’ve been following their journey for a very long time and they never stop surprising me with their beautiful open crumb loaves and exciting flavours. Sourdough made with matcha, turmeric or apricots & pecans, are just a few delicious options that Arise Bakery offers. For those who live in Arcata (California), you’re very lucky!

BREADBLOK

Another gluten-free bakery based in Santa Monica (California) that I would love to share! Breadblok (@breadblok) is an organic, refined-sugar free, soy-free and gum-free bakery offering very impressive looking baguettes, pastries and gluten-free sourdough loaves. Breadblok is also a café where you can sit and enjoy wholesome sandwiches and toasties made with their beautiful sourdough bread . If only they weren’t more than 5000 miles away from me!
